Simple Standing Bow hack ….

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

You're not alone if you feel your Standing Bow sucks and lacks power.

Typically this is because you’re misguiding your efforts.

When learning Standing Bow pose, you were probably told your power, or the engine of the posture comes from kicking the foot back & away while driving the arm forward.

Incorrect Effort

Beginners Mindset

To some degree, the mindset of kicking the foot back while charging the arm forward does help an absolute beginner figure out the basic framework of the posture.

Performance Mindset

But from a biomechanical point of view, that is extremely ineffective because all your effort gets absorbed into your limbs.

To understand this, think about how a boxer throws a punch. All the power comes from the hips, NOT the arms. The Spine transmits the power from the hips through the spine into the shoulder and onto the arm and fist.

Transmission of Power

This transmission of power is used in Golf, Tennis, Baseball and in Standing Bow.

Correct Effort

Standing Bow: Correct Targeted Effort

So next time you're in Standing Bow, kick back from the hip. Your power is in the hip, NOT the foot.

In addition, drive the chest forward. Your forward power is in the spine and chest, driving forward, NOT the arm.

This keeps all your power in your core, right where you want it.

To access this core power, you have to keep your whole body relaxed; otherwise, all your efforts have to overcome body tension, which means, once again, all your power gets absorbed.

Relax and Open

Relaxed and open is your mantra, chest forward, kicking back from the hips.

Benefits of the Sohot Method

If you suffer from tight hips or you often feel lower spine tension when doing this posture, this approach will put a stop to all that.

We call it the Sohot Method. But we haven't invented anything new, it's just how the body like to move.
